John Nielsen is a Managing Director of AAA and responsible for Automotive Engineering and Repair. He joined the AAA leadership team in 1997 creating a series of more than 7,000 certified repair shops to support members in need of emergency repairs and everyday maintenance. Additional responsibilities include advocacy for motorist issues, auto buying for more than 57 million members, creation of mobile charging solutions for electric vehicles and a patent for translating vehicle diagnostic codes.

Nielsen was appointed to his current position in 2013 and tasked to develop an automotive engineering group that provides assessments of emerging automotive technology and trends important to motorists, legislators and the repair industry. Backed by a small team of engineers and scientists, AAA has provided unbiased research on autonomous technology, vehicle lighting, lubricants and fuels. The impact of these efforts includes significant media visibility, industry reference of research projects and validated impact on motorist’s perception and purchasing habits.

John has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive industry and earned a degree in business management. He has held an ASE Master certification, delivered a TEDx Talk on Autonomous Vehicle technology, authored the book “Making Sense of Car Care”, and participates with numerous industry projects and government initiatives. In addition, he is a frequent speaker at industry events and guest on radio and TV shows throughout the country.
