Mettler is recognized for his twenty year reign as President and Chairman of TRW. He spearheaded TRW’s transformation from a domestic supplier to leading global automotive supplier.  His leadership boosted the company’s automotive sales from $450 million to $3.1 billion, half of which was earned outside North America.  He led TRW’s involvement in the occupant restraint business and pioneered the transfer of automotive safety technology to other countries.
