Pyke Johnson

Distinguished Service Citation Award 1955

In recognition of his great contributions to the nation and to the traveling public through his devotion to highway problems, thus promoting safety and speed on common roads; For his early interest in road improvements while with the Colorado State Highway Department, his twenty-one years’ service to the automobile industry as Executive Vice-President and Washington representative of the Automobile Manufacturers Association.

For his part in promoting the Pan American Highway, also his attendance and counsel at highway conferences in Seville, Buenos Aires, Milan, Rio de Janeiro and Washington; For his twenty-three years as Secretary of the Highway Education Board and nineteen years as Secretary-General of the Pan American Highway Confederation.

For his services as President of the Automotive Safety Foundation, at the President’s Highway Safety Conference and on the Executive Committee of the Highway Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences. He is justly called “The Prophet of the Long Road,” a title well earned.
