Vivek Chaand Sehgal

Inducted 2024

Vivek Chaand Sehgal is an accomplished business leader and entrepreneur known for his instrumental role in transforming the global automotive industry. He is the co-founder and chairman of the Motherson Group (MG), a multinational conglomerate headquartered in India. Under his visionary leadership, MG has grown from a modest operation into one of the largest and most respected automotive component manufacturers in the world.

Vivek Chaand Sehgal co-founded Motherson with his mother in 1975. Beginning his career with just $15 U.S., his entrepreneurial spirit led him to see an opportunity to become an automotive industry supplier with Maruti Suzuki in 1983. It was the start of a journey during which he committed the company to learning how to earn the trust of the customers. Since the outset, he has acknowledged the importance of quality management and continuous improvement techniques, working towards the vision “to become globally preferred sustainable solutions provider”. Sehgal saw the shop floor as the foundation of the company and treated employees like family by making sure they were looked after and creating opportunities for them to grow. In 1993, Sehgal listed Motherson on the stock exchanges in India, seeing that it would lead to professionalisation and the ability to attract more capital and better talent. In 1995, he introduced ambitious five-year plans that allowed Motherson to dream big and establish targets, which the company has published and reported on, every five years since then. He adopted the concept of Return on Capital Employed, which became a guiding star for Motherson, as it could be understood by people at all levels and allowed everyone to contribute. By earning customers’ trust, OEMs gradually asked Sehgal to do more, including expand- ing outside India. Under his leadership, Motherson has made several acquisitions and turned into a global company, serving all major global OEMs. In 2020, Sehgal announced that the company would diversify into new industries beyond automotive, namely Aerospace, Health and Medical, Logistics Solutions, and Technology and Industrial Solutions. From its origins as a small company serving one customer with one product in one country, Sehgal has transformed Motherson into a manufacturing specialist and one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers. Firmly believing that “We are a NOT YET company,” Sehgal is always open to new ideas and has successfully spread this philosophy of openness down the line in Motherson. Across a journey of almost 50 years, Sehgal has been keen to ensure the company continuously evolves and transforms. But on one thing, he has remained consistent, which is the purpose: “Together we aim to continuously delight all who put trust in us and go after seemingly impossible goals so that we provide sustainable opportunities for our associates and are proud to be part of something larger than ourselves.”
